Single malt Scotch whisky brand The Macallan is set to unveil a unique collaboration between the worlds of whisky distilling and perfumery, with the launch of Edition No. 3.
The limited-edition bottling is the result of the combined efforts of Macallan’s master whisky maker, Bob Dalgarno, and master perfumer, Roja Dove, owner of Roja Parfums.
The third release of the Edrington-owned whisky brand’s Edition Series will be release in markets across the globe from this month, and promises to unite the worlds of whisky and aroma to reveal the complexities of single malt character.
'Like preceding releases, Edition No.3 is an exploration into our approach to whisky making, exposing the detail of its creation for true transparency, and showcasing the absolute skill of our master whisky maker,' a Macallan spokesperson commented.
Edition No.3 represents the first time Macallan has stepped into the world of perfumery and continues the brands aim of showcasing the diverse qualities of its oak casks – a commitment introduced with Edition No.1 and Edition No.2.
The Macallan Edition Series was launched in late 2015 as an annual release of a special cask selection whisky co-created with special partners. Edition No. 1 was a limited edition single malt Scotch drawn from eight of the finest European and American oak cask styles.
Edition No. 2 was a collaboration between Dalgarno and the Roca brothers, founders of the three Michelin-starred El Celler de Can Roca – twice named the World’s Best Restaurant.
For Edition No. 3, Dove has been engaged to identify and describe the distinctive aromas in particular Macallan oak casks. Subsequently, Dalgarno used these aromatic descriptions to determine cask selection to help shape the final character of Edition No.3.
'In Edition No. 3 we have collaborated with one of the world’s most respected aroma experts to create a single malt whisky which pushes the boundaries and challenges convention,' Dalgarno said. 'There are great parallels between the worlds of whisky and perfume and it has been fascinating to work with Roja to explore the power of aroma in individual oak casks and its influence on the resulting whisky.'
'From the beginning it was obvious Bob and I had a lot in common,' Dove added. 'We have worked together to master the balance of taste and aroma, resulting in an incredibly flavoursome, fresh and citrus whisky with enveloping sweetness. Edition No. 3 is an exceptional example of the whisky maker’s art, where Bob has interpreted my thoughts so accurately, when combined with the extraordinary power of scent.'
Matured in a combination of European and American oak casks and carrying an ABV of 48.3%, Edition No.3 is said to lead with a sweet, fruity character with notes of vanilla, fresh oak, delicate florals, apple and fruitcake.
Approximately 250,000 bottles of The Macallan Edition No. 3 will be available in all global markets at around £75.
