Madrid's Santamanía Gin launched in the UK

24 July 2015

The Spanish market is crazy for gin, but it's not yet quite as crazy as we are in the UK when it comes to making the stuff. One of its home-grown juniper spirits has recently made its way to our shores though, called Santamanía.

Available in the UK from Gin Foundry, it's made in Madrid in what's said to be Spain's first urban distillery. Santamanía's creators aren't missing any tricks when it comes to using Spanish ingredients either. The base, for example, is a neutral spirit distilled from the native Tempranillo grape. The botanicals are a mix of traditional and Spanish, from Spanish lime and lemon, to coriander seed and liquorice root.

It's earthy, funky and spiced on the nose, with big citrus notes and yes, a grape or grappa-like element to it too. The palate has massive amounts of juniper bitterness, as well as some woody spice notes and a savoury edge too. It's powerful, bracing and fresh, and guaranteed to stand up in a cocktail.
