Michelin awards the Araki three stars

03 October 2017

Michelin has awarded its latest batch of stars, as well as taking some previous stars away. Chef Mitsuhiro Araki’s restaurant, the Araki in London’s Regent Street, was the only restaurant to be awarded the coveted three stars. Claude Bosi's Bibendum gained two stars and 17 others were awarded one.

Araki's achievement is made all the more impressive as it's the first Japanese restaurant in the UK to hold three stars. It's also the first time in seven years a UK restaurant has picked up three new Michelin stars since Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester.

'I have a responsibility for my customers and for our future,' gushed Araki as he accepted the award, having previously run a restaurant in Tokyo which held three stars.

New one Michelin-starred restaurants include Michael Caines’ Lympstone Manor, Devon; The Clock House, Ripley, Surrey; Matt Worswick’s The Latymer at Pennyhill Park, Surrey; and Loch Bay on the Isle of Skye. Fifteen restaurants were stripped of their stars due to closure or changes in head chefs.

Sandia Chang and James Knappett of Bubbledogs picked up the Welcome and Service Award, which Michelin revealed was due to their harmony between the kitchen and service teams.

Appearing for the first time in 1911, the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland now recommends more than 3,000 places to eat.
