Calling all super-sommeliers, it's that time of year again, entries are open for Moët UK Sommelier of the Year.
Now in its 38th year, Moët & Chandon and the Academy of Food & Wine Service (AFWS) are on the hunt, with the competition open to professional sommeliers and waiting staff in the UK.
Taking place in London, the July grand final will be in front of an audience of top names in the country's hospitality industry, including previous victors Terry Kandylis (2016), Tanguy Martin (2015), Gérard Basset MW OBE, Ronan Sayburn MS and Jan Konetzki amongst others.
'Moët & Chandon is thrilled to once again be partnering with the Sommelier of the Year competition – a vital vehicle for furthering sommelier education, and helping to improve their skills,' said Julie Nollet, marketing & communications director at Moët Hennessy.
'Over the last six years, we’ve seen the high calibre of the UK entrants and believe the dedication and hard work that goes into becoming a top sommelier thoroughly deserves recognition and reward. We wish all applicants the best of luck for 2017.'
Judge Gérard Basset, OBE, MW added, 'Standards are improving all the time as restaurants put more emphasis on wines and their sommeliers are expected to know far more than ever before. This competition tests all areas of sommellerie and the vast knowledge they must possess. Its winners go on to become role models for young people in the food and beverage industry.'
Looking to enter? Candidates will be judged on their wine expertise as well as their ability to deal efficiently and knowledgeably with customers by demonstrating exemplary front-of-house skills. An initial written entry and employer endorsement leads to regional heats around the country in April, with two sommeliers from each heat progressing to the finals day in central London.
The national finalists will also get the opportunity to visit the Moët & Chandon House and vineyards - an educational experience where they can learn more about the Champagne region.
