Yorkshire-based Ossett Brewery has sold a 50% stake in its business to a private investor for an undisclosed sum.
The sale follows Ossett’s £1.7m investment in the Salt Beer Factory, a new microbrewery and taproom in Saltaire. The deal covers both the brewery and its 26 retail sites, including 19 pubs and restaurants, The Hop and Craft Asylum bars and the new Salt Beer Factory.
Ossett co-owner and pub company founder Jamie Lawson will continue to lead the brewery. His father, brewery founder Bob Lawson, will stay on as non-executive chairman. BJSS software company co-founder Mark Hunter, who purchased the stake, will sit on the board without taking part in the business’ day-to-day operations.
‘Since my father founded the brewery in 1998 and I founded the pub company in 2003, we have grown beyond all recognition and merged into one group in 2016,’ said Jamie Lawson. ‘Taking on a business partner with Mark’s experience at this time will provide funding and knowledge for the next, really exciting chapter of our growth.’
Salt Beer Factory is set to begin canning its own beers in 2019, releasing new IPAs and lagers in cans and kegs. The company also plans to open more Craft Asylum venues next year.
‘Our strategy is to take advantage of our newly developed and modernised brewery in Ossett through increased production while growing our freehold Ossett pub estate,’ commented Lawson.
