Champagne house Perrier-Jouët has launched new vintages of its Belle Époque prestige cuvée.
Belle Époque 2008 is a blend of 50% chardonnay from the Côtes des Blanc, 45% pinot noir grown in the Montagne de Reims and 5% pinot meunier from vineyards in Dizy.
'Belle Époque 2008 is a wonderfully vibrant vintage that presents crisp freshness with good length on the palate – the ideal balance of delicacy and structure,' said cellar master Hervé Deschamps. He described the growing conditions in 2008 as good: 'We had a very cold spring at the beginning of the year, but summer was warm and sunny, especially at the start of September.'
With pretty floral aromas, the 2008 is elegant and well rounded, boasting a lovely freshness on the palate. The dosage of nine grams per litre is 'not strong - it's enough to develop a bit of roundness on the palate,' Deschamps said.
He also unveiled the Belle Époque Rosé 2007, a chardonnay-dominant blend made with the addition of around 11% red wine, which is only being released in magnum.
Pale onion-skin pink in colour, it has a fresh citrus nose with notes of pink grapefruit, followed by a red-fruit palate with spice developing on the finish. With brisk acidity and nice grip, it's a good food wine, with 'high potential for ageing' according to Deschamps.
'I would pair this with seafood, especially lobster, but also Japanese beef and pigeon breast. Red fruit desserts of course, but it's also perfect with a pink grapefruit sabayon,' he noted.
