The BACARDÍ Legacy Cocktail Competition has become one of the most rigorous and prestigious bartender challenges in the world. This year UK bartenders competing in what will be the seventh edition of the competition not only get the chance to pit their skills against some of the best bar talent on the planet; they also stand the chance of winning a once-in-a-lifetime trip around the world.
The challenge facing all those who take part is to create a Legacy cocktail recipe that can stand the test of time and become a modern classic. It’s no small feat, so this year a seminar is being held to help bartenders better understand what is expected of them.
Taking place at Dandelyan in London on 6 August, former BACARDÍ Legacy competition winner, Chris Moore of the Beaufort Bar at The Savoy, will be sharing his tips and experience of the competition alongside BACARDÍ brand ambassador for Northern Europe, Shervene Shahbazkhani. The UK competition then gets underway in September, with a series of regional heats taking place in London (23 September), Edinburgh (21 September), Manchester (16 September), Belfast (15 September) and Bristol (14 September). Each heat will see bartenders go head-to-head and be judged by a panel of respected industry experts, including BACARDÍ brand ambassador, Metinee (May) Kongsrivilai.
Three winners from London and one from each of the regional heats will then be picked to compete at the UK final on 10 November. All seven finalists will get the chance to hone both their mixology skills and refine their Legacy cocktail recipes further before the final, at a special workshop to be held in London on 1st October, where advice will also be offered on how to use social media to generate support.
The seven will then be put through their paces in front of a crowd of industry faces for what promises to be another nail-biting final. The ‘Three Most Promising’ bartenders for the UK will be selected, each winning an all-expenses paid trip to the USA. They will then embark on a campaign to promote their Legacy cocktail between November 2015 and March 2016.
The National Winner will be announced at an intimate dinner with the bartenders’ friends and family, along with industry influencers, on 15 March 2016. He or she then will go on to represent the UK in the global final in San Francisco in April 2016.
