From its 2,100ha spread across the best terroirs of Champagne, Nicolas Feuillatte crafts a range of exceptional champagnes, now available to the on-trade through Castelnau Wine Agencies

Each with its own unique character, yet always showing an inimitable house style, Nicolas Feuillatte champagnes are a source of intense emotions.

The story of Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte started in 1976, on the hillsides in the heart of the Côte des Blancs. It was a joint effort of two visionaries Henri Macquart, the founder of the Centre Vinicole de la Champagne, and Nicolas Feuillatte, a gifted businessman from a family of wine and spirits négociants, who had already made his fortune importing coffee from Africa to the US.

Together, and with the support of dedicated cooperative vignerons, the pair risked everything to create a brand of excellence, which became Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte. Their efforts soon paid off, with people like the Kennedys and Aristotle Onassis being among their first and most enthusiastic customers.

As early as 1986 their champagne was already featuring in the top 10 exported to the US. Today, Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte is the youngest of the major houses yet the biggest growers’ brand, and is the top-selling champagne in France and third bestseller worldwide.

Exceptional terroirs

Thanks to the commitment and passion of 4,500 growers spread from the Vallée de la Marne to the Côte des Bar, via the Montagne de Reims, Côte de Sézanne and the Vallée de l’Ardre, Feuillatte cellar master Guillaume Roffiaen can play with a staggering array of exceptional terroirs to create his wines.

Perfectly ripe grapes make up the champagnes, much of which come from 11 of the 17 AOC-certified grands crus, and 26 of the 42 premiers crus.

The wide diversity of soils produce grapes of very different personality, which are vinified individually by cru and by varietal. Sand lends suppleness and marked fruit character, marl and limestone confer structure, while chalk offers minerality and complexity that help the wine age gracefully.

Time is indeed a key ingredient in all Nicolas Feuillatte champagnes, which exceed the minimum legal limit of three years for a vintage, resting for up to ten years in the case of the prestige cuvée Palmes d’Or.

A new range for the on-trade

The lineup now available to the on-trade includes the Réserve Exclusive Brut, Réserve Exclusive Rosé, Collection Vintage 2009 Brut and a Blanc de Blancs 2012, as well as special vintages of Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs and Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs. These champagnes reflect the harmony, finesse and unmatched uniqueness of the region from where they originate, with its hillsides, houses, and cellars listed on Unesco’s World Heritage.

The new range of Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte has been blended especially for the on-trade.

‘Our existence in the UK was, of late, exclusively confined to retail,’ said managing director Christophe Juarez. ‘Our job [now] is to share our savoir-faire with consumers who really appreciate fine champagnes – just like in other parts of the world where we perform well.’

For Nicolas Feuillatte, luxury is about elegance and attitude, emotion and pleasure. Champagne does not just need to be reserved for exceptional circumstances, but shared during the most cherished moments. Each Nicolas Feuillatte champagne seeks, in its own way, to brighten life with elegance. But after all, they were all born in an enchanted land…
