Warwickshire-based Purity Brewing has launched a new limited-edition lager made in collaboration with renowned German brewery Bayreuther Brauhaus.

The beer, labelled as Pure Helles Lager, is a 5%-abv classic Bavarian helles made with English Maris Otter malt, Pilgrim hops from Worcestershire and a blend of noble hops from Bavaria, which Bayereuther head brewer Markus Breimle brought over from Bavaria himself, causing ‘a few odd looks going through security at the airport’.

‘With this collaboration we’ve been able to make the most of our own state of the art BrauKon brewery kit and learn how to make lager from our German partners,’ Purity Brewing marketing manager Paul Brazier told Imbibe.

‘It was an incredible experience to brew with [Bayreuther’s] Markus and share knowledge, ideas and best practices,’ commented Purity head brewer Flo Vialan.

‘What was different to anything we’ve done at Purity was brewing using a step mash method and a classic Helles yeast’ added Vialan. ‘Markus was adamant that it was necessary to do it to get the traditional characteristics of a German brew that with our yeast and a different process we just wouldn’t achieve.’

Purity has been long distributing Bayreuther beers in the UK and suggested the collaboration brew to make the most the partnership. ‘We’ve worked with Bayreuther for a long time and eventually we’ve created a close relationship, so we thought we could do more with them rather than just stocking and distributing the beer,’ said Brazier.

Pure Helles Lager’s first pint was poured at the Purecraft Bar & Kitchen in Birmingham last Tuesday and will be available in 30-litre kegs across the on-trade.

‘For now it’s just a limited edition, but we are looking at other opportunities to work with Bayreuther Brauhaus again,’ said Brazier.
