Ran Van Ongevalle has been announced as the winner of this year’s Bacardi Legacy Global Cocktail Competition.

The Belgian’s winning cocktail, Clarita, was named the best of the rest at the grand final, held at E-Werk in Berlin on 23 May.

'This is just too much to take in. It feels like I am honouring my family with this win,' said Ongevalle. 'This trophy is pretty heavy to hold, but I’m not putting it down!'

Ongevalle, who works at The Pharmacy bar in Knokke-Heist, created a simple and sophisticated stirred number, with a healthy dose of Bacardi Gran Reserva 8 Años rum, amontillado sherry, and touches of absinthe, crème de cacao and saline solution.

He came out on top after competing against eight finalists, all bringing original drinks and ideas to the table.

The number of finalists was whittled down from a list of 38 bartenders from 38 countries, all of whom travelled to Berlin for a week of education and competition, before the grand finalists were chosen.

Ongevalle’s drink was inspired by heritage, family and tradition – a testament not only to the fact that he is following in his father’s footsteps as a bartender and Bacardi Legacy competitor, but also to the continued ascent of bartending as an aspirational career.

'Ran brought an irresistible offer to the grand final tonight: a delicious drink, a very impressive campaign in which he has promoted it for several months and a stellar performance on stage,' said Dickie Cullimore, Bacardi global brand ambassador.

'We are excited to be bringing Clarita to the world stage now as the next Bacardi Legacy cocktail.'

He wins a year’s worth of support to further his bartending career by creating experiences tailored to meet his career goals, gains worldwide recognition for his drink and will provided with a platform from which he will serve Clarita at some of the finest bars in the world.

The finalists presented their drinks in front of an audience of invited guests, and a panel of judges representing some of the most influential names in the industry: maestro de Ron Bacardi José Sanchez Gavito; renowned Tokyo bartender Hidetsugu Ueno; New York bartender and industry mentor Julie Reiner and Gn Chan, who won the competition last year.

The two runners-up were Grace Tsai from Taiwan with her cocktail Apóstol and Kentaro Satoh from Japan with his cocktail Mariel.
