Ready. Set. Go...Diageo World Class opens for entries

Hard to believe, but it's that time of year again: Diageo Reserve's World Class Bartender of the Year competition has opened for entries.

It's gotta be the year for a GB winner, after Jamie Jones made it to the top 10 in Mexico City last year, but sadly not to victory.

With the chance to be crowned World Class Bartender of the Year, a nifty prize package valued at over £15,000, and all those bragging rights, GB bartenders need only submit one serve. So, what are you waiting for?

The competition, like most, is made up of a series of challenges, formulated to test ability, knowledge and originality whilst conveying each bartender's unique personality and flair.

This year, The Resourceful Bartender and Heat of the Moment are two key elements in the first stage of competition entitled Closed Loop Cocktails. Keeping on-trend, the former focuses on the significance of sustainability and resourcefulness, enabling bartenders to create a better bar, serve and working environment; while the latter is all about flavour and experimentation, with more than a little culinary influence.

Interested? From now until 30 March, you are invited to submit one cocktail to Closed Loop Cocktails, which much comply to both segments executing sustainability and culinary technique. The only rules are your cocktail must include at least 30ml of any Diageo Reserve spirit from the World Class portfolio, forming the base of the serve.

Once Closed Loop Cocktails is a wrap, a further three stages of competition will take place. If successful, you can look forward to an in-bar judging process, where judges will visit bartenders across the UK to taste-test their entry drinks. Only 30 bartenders from this round will then make it into the GB semi-finals.

The ultimate GB final will then take place in June, with the victor jetting off to Berlin for the global final later this year.

'It’s hard to believe that we have launched what will be the 11th World Class Competition which marks an instrumental milestone in the drinks community,' said Nick Temperley, head of Diageo Reserve GB. 'We aim to devise new challenges and every year we see the standard of excellence increase.

'As always, we’re looking for bartenders who demonstrate forward-thinking skills and vision by pushing the boundaries to create remarkable serves. By drawing from current themes in bars across the UK, marrying together sustainable and gastronomic influences, we know we’ll discover those at the top of their game.'
