One of Rioja’s most famous names, Marques de Riscal, has joined the burgeoning Conviviality stable, leaving Barwell & Jones after just 18 months.

A source at the company told Imbibe that the wines will be distributed by Matthew Clark in the on-trade and Walker Wodehouse in the off-trade ‘with immediate effect’.

The move marks the end of a turbulent couple of years for the winery in the UK. Riscal left Enotria in 2016 for Barwell & Jones, but has called time on that relationship less than two years after signing up to it.

Conviviality’s Spain buyer, Jamie Avenell, told Imbibe he was ‘delighted’ to welcome Marques de Riscal to the group’s portfolio and to begin working with their ‘excellent range’.

‘This partnership further strengthens our Rioja offering, and offers Marques de Riscal the opportunity to further develop their business in the on-trade and with Independent merchants,' he added.

Founded in 1858, Marques de Riscal is one of Rioja’s oldest wineries, famous for its reservas, its ‘super-reserva’ Baron de Chirel and its Frank Gehry designed hotel in Elciego.
