Ring the alarm bells, for it is happening: Tequila Fortaleza is coming to the UK at long last.
While it's found a way to end up on some back bars over here through the years, its three expressions will now be widely available via Indie Brands. There's a blanco (£65), a reposado aged eight months in charred American oak barrels (£75), and an añejo aged 18 months (£110).
Destilería La Fortaleza in Tequila today uses the same stone mill to crush its blue agave as it did five generations ago, when Don Cenobio Sauza started the family business in 1873.
While the family business was sold in 1976, Destilería La Fortaleza remained in the hands of the Sauza family, who had produced tequila until 1968 when costs became too expensive. However production kicked off again in 2002 after a 34-year break, with Guillermo Sauza, the great-great-grandson of Don Cenobio, now at the helm.
Douglas Cunningham, MD of Indie Brands, said: 'After more than 10 years since its launch, we are delighted and honoured to be finally bringing Tequila Fortaleza to the UK market. Beautifully packaged, Fortaleza is a traditional stone-crushed 100% agave tequila that tastes like no other. Fortaleza has built a large and ever-growing following, and is popular with both trade and consumers across the US and Australia – a success we intend to build on and replicate in the UK.'
