With portfolio tastings in full swing, this week we checked out a range of great Kiwi wines. Spotting a 'delicate, timeless' Pinot Noir and a sophisticated Sauvignon Blanc giving the Old World a run for its money, take a look at the best of the (grape) bunch…

Craggy Range Kidnappers Vineyard Chardonnay Hawke’s Bay 2014

Craggy Range has led the way with fine, sophisticated Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc and this doesn’t disappoint. The nose has very fine aromatics and a palate imbued with citrus, hints of apricot, bracing acidity and a wonderful marine salinity. Fresh and long, and wonderful with crab.

RRP £15, Waitrose, Harvey Nichols

Julicher Pinot Noir Martinborough 2013

Dutchman Wim Julicher and his Finnish winemaker produce 5000 cases of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir. Very delicate timeless Pinot Noir red fruit aromas, elegant, red cherry and raspberry on the palate with suave though insistent tannins, lovely balance, sophisticated.

Bald Hills Single Vineyard Pinot Noir Central Otago 2014

Fresh and lush, very full in the mouth with red cherry aromas turning darker – to plum and damson, and rather exotic spice – as it progresses. Fine acidity and tannin balance. Big enough for lighter game like pigeon.

Esk Valley Left Field Malbec Hawke’s Bay 2014

Fine black fruit bursts from the glass – blackberry, blackcurrant and other brambly notes. The acidity gives freshness while the tannins are agreeably grainy, even rough-edged. A different, leaner kind of Malbec. Pair with very juicy, rare barbecued red meat.

£17.30, Hatch Mansfield, 01344 871800
