UK and Germany drive record cognac volumes

17 August 2017

After a rocky patch – to put it kindly – European cognac shipments have steadied and are back in growth.

According to the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac, BNIC to you and me, volumes increased by 10.1% and value was up by 8.1% from 1 August 2016 to 31 July 2017.

Blighty and Germany are partly credited for this growth as volume grew 3.6% and 22.2% respectively. Total European exports totalled more than 42.1 m bottles.

‘Once again, export growth during the 2016/17 campaign was in line with, and even surpassed, the forecasts identified by the professionals as part of their business plan for the cognac sector,’ the BNIC said.

‘The objective of the cognac business plan is to guarantee that production and stock levels are in line with demand. Future discussions in the Charentes-Cognac region regarding authorisation for 2018 plantings will take into account this information, and will form part of the long-term management of the cognac sector.’

Frost and hail damage weighs heavily on the region’s mind and the BNIC has said the cognac sector will work on developing measure to help viticulturalists manage these dangers and ‘make every effort to better prevent climatic events causing damaging in the future’.
