Altemura, Saliente Brut, Puglia, Italy
Altemura has broken the mould with this 100% Falanghina sparkler – a first for the Puglia DO. Mineral and fresh on the nose, it has a crisp, mineral palate, balanced by a touch of pear fruit. A food-friendly streak of salinity runs through; try pairing this with seafood or sushi. JS
Mâcon Village La Crochette 2015, Burgundy, France
Maison Loron makes this elegant wine from Chardonnay grown on the clay-limestone soils of southern Burgundy. A fresh and mineral style, with a touch of creaminess on both the nose and palate. Lovely stuff – and great value for this quality. JS
McPherson, Princess Butterfly Sparkling Moscato 2015, Victoria, Australia
Yes, there’s a time and a place for sparkling Moscato, but we think there’s lots to love about this one from McPherson, from its knock-out price to its pretty packaging. The cherry and strawberry nose prepares you for a palate that’s a big bowl of cherries, with some ripe lime notes and a fresh fizz. Pair it with afternoon tea or red fruit desserts. JS
Weingut Breitenfelder, Grüner Veltliner 2014, Weinvertel, Austria
Harald Breitenfelder is one of Weinvertel’s new-wave winemakers, who is forging a new identity for the region. This focused Grüner has laser-sharp acidity, with a focused, mineral, citrus-and-stones palate that cries out for food. JS
Redbank Wines, Emily Brut Cuvée NV, Victoria, Australia
A new addition to the Negociants UK portfolio, this delicate sparkler is a blend of 58% Chardonnay and 42% Pinot Noir, grown in Victoria’s King Valley. Lovely fruit on the palate – lemon, apple, pear and quince – with a pleasant creaminess that’s balanced by fresh acidity and persistent bubbles.
Hattingley Valley Classic Reserve NV, Hampshire, England
Winemaker Emma Rice knows her sparklers. This NV is a blend of fruit mostly from the 2014 vintage (82%), with 50% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, 19% Pinot Meunier and a rather unexpected 1% Pinot Grigio. Partly fermented in oak, with no malo, it’s a fresh, fruit-driven fizz, with green apples and a nice toastiness on the palate.
